Ipsum Group Buys Its Way Into Somerset

Ipsum has acquired utility engineering specialist NPB Utilities, expanding its Water and Infrastructure division.

Ipsum Group has acquired NPB Utilities, a water and utility services engineering firm based in Yeovil, Somerset, strengthening its Water and Infrastructure division ahead of continued demand tied to the current investment cycle. NPB Utilities provides water mains installation and repair, leak detection, drainage and sewer work, CCTV surveying, groundworks, civil engineering and emergency response.

The deal joins NPB's regional engineering expertise with Ipsum's existing capabilities, according to the companies, aiming for end to end delivery across the regulated water sector in southern England. Ipsum described the acquisition as part of a broader strategy of investing in regional delivery capability and operational resilience.

NPB Utilities built its reputation over decades on safe and responsive delivery, officials said, and the combined business will span wastewater repairs, treatment works activity, main lining and clean water operations. The acquisition adds to Ipsum's field capacity, supporting both planned programmes and emergency response across the network.

The transaction reflects broader consolidation across the UK water supply chain, where mid market engineering specialists holding valuable framework positions have increasingly become acquisition targets. Many were founded decades ago by owner managers now approaching retirement, without the capital to scale for the volumes the current investment period demands. Analysts expect that pattern to continue as funded programmes mobilize and order books strengthen across the sector.
